On November 18th, 2016, I was lucky enough to attend the Diabetes Walk held at Zabeel Park! At the event, Al Islami Kids Club was more than happy to set up a little kiosk. The kiosk contained many fun and fit activities thanks to Dubai Sports Council, as well as Manchester Clinic showing parents and kids how they can maintain a healthy lifestyle by using Al Islami products. Melrish Photos also set up a photobooth to create some memories!
The Diabetes Walk started at 8 am and I was so surprised to see lots of happy people attending. There were people who had diabetes and people who were supporters of the cause. Before the walk started I got my diabetes walk shirt and cap and was ready to start walking for a cause I am very passionate about. There were a ton of people so the walk started off pretty slow but soon enough I started to slowly jog through the walk. During the walk, there were many people playing the drums and singing. It felt great to be in such a vibrant environment. After the walk, there were so many more activities to do! They had bouncy castles, fitness classes, nutrition talks and I even did some cooking demonstrations.
In my cooking demonstrations, I showed diabetics how they can choose healthy alternatives and how it can be just as tasty! My first recipe was low carb instant strawberry cheesecake. The main component of the dish was the Al Islami Strawberries which are super fresh and work really well with the cheesecake. After an hours break, I then presented my classic Vietnamese Spring Rolls (my signature dish!!). This was a huge hit with the audience and they loved how the Al Islami Chicken Breast was a nice golden brown colour.
When my cooking demonstrations were over, I had a bit of free time to myself, so I did one of the fitness classes and beat my dad through an obstacle course! My dad and I then when to check out one of the medical stands, which were testing people’s blood sugar to make sure they were at risk of having diabetes. My dad gave it a go and he was 99 mg which is practically perfect!
By the end of the morning, it slowly started to die down. As people were leaving you could tell that they had a great time. It was great experience doing the Diabetes Walk 2016 and so nice to see many joyful people enjoying themselves while helping a cause. I made a vlog of this whole day which should be up on my YouTube channel, so you can see what I’m talking about. Thank you The Landmark Group for hosting such a great event! Hopefully, see you next year!
