I have now been back in Australia for over three months and I think I am fully adjusted back to the Australian way of life. I spent 10 years in Dubai, most of my life, so it was a big change to move back.
Things I love:
I love that there are seasons in Australia. Summer is completely different from Autumn, Winter and Spring. Sometimes it is nice to feel cold and the rain is refreshing.
Meeting New Friends
It has been so nice to meet a whole new group of people who have different viewpoints and ideas and senses of humour. I love making new friends and all the people in my boarding house and in my class at school have been so welcoming and nice to me.
Being close to Family
Having my relatives in the same country as where I live has been a real bonus. Even though they are still a little way away I always know that they are there for me whenever I need them and we have had a few occasions to catch up on weekends
I’m really enjoying being at a new school and learning the new curriculum and the Australian way of doing things. At first it was really difficult and I felt I didn’t fit in but that soon passed and now I love going to school. It is great because my boarding house is right next door so I get to sleep in in the mornings 🙂
I am doing so much sport in Australia. Australians love their sport and everyone does something. I have been going to the gym, doing athletics at school, and doing a weekly 5km fun run every Saturday. It’s great to be active and feel healthy and fit.
Things I miss:
OK, sometimes the cold weather and rain does make it hard to get out of bed in the morning so I do miss the fact that it is not sunny every day!
Mum and Dad
The hardest thing by far is being away from my Mum and Dad. I really miss them and they really miss me. But we talk almost every day on the phone and we are constantly sending photos and messages on WhatsApp. So it does not feel so far away. And luckily we get to catch up when I go to Dubai and in the school holidays
It’s great having new friends but I still miss my old friends that I grew up with. I was lucky in Dubai to have some great friends that were there the same amount of time that I was. I miss them a lot.
The shopping in Dubai is amazing. The shopping in country Victoria not so much! When I can get into the city it is great but there is not much to buy where my school is.
The hotels in Dubai are the best I have seen anywhere in the world. I used to love going out for lunch on the weekend and having staycations during summer.
All in all, everything is going well and I am lucky that I get to experience the best of both worlds.
