Two weeks ago I finally received from Australia the long awaited Abbott Freestyle Libre Sensor, and I must say, I’m in love! The sensor replaces the blood strip testing where you need to prick your finger 10 times a day. It is a small disk with a tiny needle that sticks onto the back of my arm – kind of like those nicotine patches which is what my school teacher thought it was!! You then have a monitor that scans the sensor whenever you like and gives an instant reading of my blood glucose levels. I’m telling you guys this has been a LIFE CHANGER. Although I’ve only used it for about 2 weeks, checking my blood has actually now become a hobby of mine (and of my mum’s during the night– now she doesn’t have to wake me to check my blood) . It is super convenient! Want to do a quick blood check in class… BAM! Readings in a second, indicating whether I’m going low/high quickly or slowly or just staying the same. As you might know, I love to stay active and having the sensor on doesn’t even bother me. It’s also waterproof, so it doesn’t stop me doing my thing with swimming (well only for 30 minutes at a time in water but that is better than nothing). Some of my friends have asked me if it hurts, and most of the time I even forget it’s there. One of my favourite features is the daily graph. This feature shows your blood sugar throughout the day on a graph. Even if you don’t check your blood all the time it shows up to 8 hours of your blood glucose levels. Which in my opinion, is extremely handy 🙂
So if you are a diabetic or if you have a friend/family member that is a diabetic, then I 110% recommend them to give it a go. It is a little bit pricey at A$95 for every disk that only lasts two weeks, but trust me it makes the biggest difference! There is no going back to pricking my finger all day for me!
