This time of year means one thing for those of you still at school – exam time! For those in the Middle East it is end of year exams and for those of you in Australia it is half year exams. Wherever you are, here are my tips for helping you through this period:
Before your exam week starts, make sure that you have had the time to revise each of your subjects. Make some handwritten summaries – the act of just writing down the facts will help them stick in your mind. You can then re-read these summaries wherever you are until you are sure that you have them stuck in your memory. I like to use flash cards where I write the question on the front and then the answer on the back.
For subjects like maths, see if you can get copies of previous exams and work through all the maths problems on those and check against the answers. Re-do maths problems from each subject that you have completed in the term to make sure that you know how to do each of them. Ones that you have problems with still you should raise with your teacher in plenty of time before the exam to ensure they can help you understand how to do it.
It’s important to still look after yourself even when you are studying lots of hours. If you eat healthy your mind will work better! Your body needs to be in peak condition to deal with the stress of exams. Also the last thing you need is to get sick during exam time so make sure you think about the type of food you are eating and try and get out in the fresh air to do some exercise. It will clear your mind and make it easier to study later in the night. I am making sure that I eat lots of fresh fruit in the mornings to get me off to a good start each day.
Get help from Friends
Remember that your friends are also going through the same thing. If they share the same subjects as you, getting together to help revise is a great idea. You can make up a list of questions and answers and quiz each other to make sure you both understand the subject. If you are having trouble with understanding something, your friends can help explain it to you. You can also complain about all the subjects and teachers and have a good laugh which is always a good way of relieving stress!
Have some balance
Life cannot be all about one thing. So while this is an important time to put the effort into schooling, make sure that there is some balance in your life. If you work, you still need to go out and do that. Don’t skip the gym session. Have some time to speak with friends or family. Put in the extra effort to study but don’t overdo it where it becomes too stifling and you can’t focus.
When it comes to the exam, try and relax. If you are stressed out you will not be able to think clearly. If you have followed my tips above you should be ready. Take a big breath….you’ve got this!!
